There are several indicators that you should warn you that your toilet needs some repairs. For example, you may find that you are not able to flash the toilet, low water level, clogged bowl or sewer lines, worn out parts, might cause this or there may be a clogged siphon. Spontaneous refills can be an indicator that the flapper may be damaged. There may also be some hissing or trickling sounds in the tank, which may be a sigh that the fill valve and float might be damaged. Knowing how to fix this is very important.
How to install a toilet

In this article, I will guide you on all the steps you should follow to install a toilet. Let us go through them.

Clean the closet flange

You can start by cleaning the closet flange. You can use a rag and mineral spirits to get rid of any old residue. You can put a rag inside a plastic bag and put it in the opening in the floor if the odor is too much. After cleaning, take some time to check whether there are breaks or extensive wear. You also need to check the floor surrounding the flange to ensure that there is no damage.
Put the tank bolts
Because you do not want to reuse the old tank bolts now you should install new ones. Place the tank bolts in the opening and ensure that they are paced in a way where they can hold the biggest part of the flange material.

Remove the wax ring

You should now remove the wax ring and put on the underside of the new bowl around the horn. You should not touch the wax ring because it can be tricky, as it seems like it can sick to you. After applying the wax ring, you can now remove the protective covering. If you had paced the put the plastic bag in the opening of the floor, you should remove it at this stage.

Install toilet bowl

You can now place the bowl into the flange and ensure you do not damage the wax ring. The new bolts you installed should match perfectly with new bowl. After you have installed the bowl, you can protect it by adding nuts and washers to the bolts. You should not over tighten the bolts.

Install flush valve

In some, cases the fill valve and the flush valve come preinstalled depending with the toilet you had purchased. If the fill valve and the flush valve were not installed you can do this now.  You can insert the flush valve in the tank opening and thread a spud nut over to tighten. You can finalize by putting a foam spud washer on the spud nut.

Install fill valve

You can adjust your fill valve according to the height of water level recommended by the manufacturer. The place the fill valve into the tank and ensure that the lock nut is tight to hold it to the tank. You can use pliers to tighten it further.

Preparing the tank

Place a rubber washer in each of the tank bolts then insert it into the bolt holes from the inside of the tank. You should thread a hex nut and a brass washer onto the bolts and ensure that they are tight using your hand. You should ensure you do not over tighten. You can do this with the tank lying on its back.

Installing the tank

You can now put the tank on the bowl. Bolt nuts on the bowl should align with the bolts on the tank. Put a rubber washer and a brass washer and secure it using a wing nut. You should tighten the bolts evenly.

Connect your water supply

Attach the supply tube from the wall to the tank, use the coupling nut provided, and ensure you do not over tighten. You can turn the water on and check for any leaks.

Install the toilet seat

This is the last step. Align the holes of the bowl with the holes on the seat. Thread through the bolts, which are provided then attach the nuts. You have now installed your toilet. That is how you install a toilet.

How to trap a mouse?

Do you have a mouse or rat in your flat or house? These tiny little critters can be creepy and really annoying. Although you are sure that they will not kill you while you are sleeping, nobody wants to share his place with critters as flat mates. So, you are now probably asking yourself how to trap those little things? The answer is in this article. You could read best mouse traps reviews to prepare for this exercise.
How to trap a mouse?

BEST METHOD WITH STEP BY STEP EXPLANATION

There are many ways to trap the mouse, but the best of all is the traditional method which we will explain here. However, if you think some other will work better for you, you can read about more methods here.
First of all, you might hear stories about how much mice are intelligent, that they work together and can trick you. Before we start, you must know that if you follow these simple steps, you will find out that none of that is true.

  1. Setting the traps – you may have evidence where the mouse has been, you have seen it or you just feel where it might be. It is really important to place multiple traps because you cannot know where the mouse can be and what is the number of mice, but remember where they are so you don’t accidentally step on one of those. Mouse traps are not expensive and you can find them almost everywhere.
  2. Second step is to bait the traps – You don’t need to buy specially designed mouse bait, any food from your home will work. You can use bacon, peanut butter and much more, even though highly recommended is cheese. You may laugh to this, but cheese as a mouse trap is one of the things you can learn watching cartoons. The food should ne high in protein or fat, and if you want to experiment and use other food, check this out for more working traps.
  3. All you need to is to wait – but not too long. Check the traps regularly, on every few hours or at least every day. Your goal is to catch the mouse but you don’t want it to start decomposing in your home. That could be dangerous because can attract many insects plus who would like bacteria in their home?
  4. Mouse is caught – Mission accomplished! You should now safely remove it. Don’t try to remove it from the trap. Be sure to wear protective gloves, as we said because of the bacteria. Just pick the trap up carefully, put it in a bag and throw it to nearest rubbish container. If the mouse is alive and you don’t want to kill it, then release it far away from your house because if you free it near your house, the mouse will find the way back – in the nice and warm place with food.

Well that is the guide for removing mice, but I guess nobody wants to see them again in their home or office and the key for that is prevention. You must eliminate every place where mice can hide, all they need is a small hole to survive and limited amounts of food, so close every little hole you can find. This is called “mouse- proof construction” and it is considered as the most successful form of permanent eliminating mice.

Conclusion

I hope you have learnt how to catch a mouse/rat in your house or office and more important how to block their way into your place. I tried to explain so simple that everyone can understand and use but if you are scared of critters or just don’t feel comfortable removing that animals from your home by yourself, there are many services nowadays that can do that for you. In the end, if your house has a good isolation, you don’t need to worry at all – your place is safe from these critters.

How to patch drywall

Would you like to know how to patch drywall? Drywall is a common construction material that is used in most of the modern construction projects. Most people prefer it due to various reasons. For example, many people like it due to its appearance. Before drywall, most buildings relied on plaster walls. Plaster was hard to be perfect and time consuming but drywall made the construction easier.
How to patch drywall
The walls and ceilings became more attractive and this increased the value of homes. In addition, drywall provides energy efficiency, which retains room temperatures. Another benefit is that unlike other alternatives, drywall is fire resistant. It is also affordable and easy to maintain. In this article, I will guide you on how to patch drywall. Let us go through some of the methods.

METHOD 1

Requirements

  • Piece of drywall
  • Drywall saw
  • Primer and paint
  • Utility knife
  • Scrap pieces of wood
  • Glue
  • Long drywall screws
  • Spackel

Step 1

Use a drywall saw to cut the edges of the hole you would like to patch and make it square.

Step 2

It can be better if your holes exposes a stud. This is because you can directly attach your drywall patch to the stud. If not, you can attach a scrap piece of wood to a nearby stud as a brace.

Step 3

Cut a piece of drywall and make it to be several inches bigger than your hole on all the four sides. You can use a utility knife with a blade, which is made for your drywall. Use a knife to cut the drywall on the four sides of your square. Fold it along those score lines to snap it. Turn it over and score the other side of the drywall along the creases. This helps in creating nice clean edges on the patch that is now cut to size.

Step 4

Mark the back side of the drywall patch in regards to the size of the hole. You can hold the patch over the hole in such a way that the edge of the hole remains out on one side. On the patch, mark where the bottom and top are. The same should be done on the other three sides and then connect the dots.

Step 5

You can snap the drywall along the four score line and rind the drywall from the paper support the other side.

Step 6

Confirm whether your patch fits in the hole. If not, trim the sides until it fits. You can create a hole for the switch box in the patch.

Step 7

Place the patch in the hole. You will realize that the paper you left along the edges overlaps the drywall behind the wall. Use a utility knife to mark the paper on the edges of your patch and on the drywall behind the patch. This will help you to determine how the patch will fit into the wall without looking inappropriate around the edges.

Step 8

Now get rid of the patch and remove the paper layer you have just cut on your wall.

Step 9

Test the patch and make the necessary changes. Create pilot holes through your patch into the stud, which you will attach to it. After you have created the pilot holes, you can now attach the patch using drywall screws.

Step 10

glue the paper on the edges of your patch to the drywall below it. You can now spackel the edges of the patch to hide the screws. After the spackel has dried, sand it to create a fine smooth finish. You can now paint your drywall.

Now you have a newly patched drywall!

METHOD 2

Small Holes

Step 1

For small holes like the ones created by a doorknob, you can use a patch kit. Put the self-adhesive mesh pat on the hole.

 Step 2

Cover the patch using lightweight joint compound with a crisscross pattern. You can feather the edges to make it blend with the wall.

Step 3

Allow it to dry and then apply another coat of compound if require. You can sand to make it smooth.

CONCLUSION

Have you gained something? I am sure you have learned a lot. Those are some of the methods on how to patch drywall. As we have seen, this is very simple process. Knowing how to go about it will save you a lot of time and resources. With all that information, you do not need the services of a technician, it is something you can do all by yourself. You just need to look for the necessary materials then go through the above steps keenly. I will appreciate your views in the comments below, feel free to share if you liked it.

What is a ukulele?

What is a ukulele? This article will cover the most important thing you should know about ukuleles. A ukulele is a string instrument usually associated with Hawaiian music. It is among the guitar family of instruments and has some common features with the standard guitar like the shape and the general constructions. A standard ukulele consists of four strings, but some use eight strings which contain two string courses.  Ukuleles are also known as uke. Here are some of the differences between ukulele and guitar.
what-is-ukulele

  1. Price – Guitars are more expensive than even the most advanced ukuleles. (Take a look at the list of best ukulele under $100 for more information)
  2. Range – A guitar has more features than a ukulele.
  3. Size - As compared to ukuleles, guitars are much larger.

HISTORY OF UKULELE

HISTORY OF UKULELE

The instrument is linked with Hawaii though it originated from Portugal in the late 1870’s.  On August 1879 a Portuguese ship arrived in Honolulu. The ship came with Joao Fernandes who had his stringed instrument known as the braguinha.  Joao sang and played with it, and it became very popular among the Hawaiians. The sudden interest attracted the attention of these three Portuguese Augusto Dias, Jose de Espirito Santo, and Manuel Nunes, after which they churned out braguinha. The name’s origin is not clear, but there is a famous story which involves a small court jester by the name Edward Purvis who kept jumping when performing then King Kakalua nicknamed him uku-lele which means jumping flea. Famous musicians such as Elvis Presley made the instrument more attractive.

STRUCTURE OF THE UKULELE

Body – It has a back, top and sides. The type of wood that makes up the body can determine the type of sound it produces. It is either solid or laminated.
Neck – This is the sturdy piece of wood which gives support to the fretboard and connects the body with the headstock.
Headstock – It is the top most of the uke where tuning pegs are attached. Serial number and the brand's logo can be found here.
Strings – These are the ones you strum to create vibrations which are sent to the sound hole to the body to create the sound.
Sound hole – It is an opening at the top of the body which allows the generated vibrations out.
Bridge – it is usually placed at the upper part of the body, and it holds a saddle which is required to put all the strings together above the fretboard.
Nut – It keeps the strings of the ukulele together.
Tuning pegs – They are also known as tuning keys and machine heads. They usually hold the strings. To tune your ukulele you just need to rotate them.
Fretboard – All the fret can be found on the fretboard. They are usually made of rosewood.
Frets - They are the metal bars on the fretboard.

TYPES OF UKULELES

There are 4 common types of ukuleles, they include.

1.    Soprano

It is also referred to as standard ukulele since it is close to the original size made in Hawaii. This instrument is around 21 inches long and consists of 12-15 frets depending on the model. Soprano only has half twenty-two tones, and it is recommended as a learner instrument for children due to its small size and the short distance between frets.  It can also be an excellent traveling companion. However, the instrument is not ideal for people with larger hands as they might find it hard to navigate the fretboard.

2.    Concert ukulele

Concert uke is bigger than the soprano. Therefore, it maintains most of the features found in soprano.  It has a length of 23 inches and consists of 15-20 frets depending on the type. This gives it a better playing range than the soprano and makes it a favorite among the ukulele soloists.

3.    Tenor ukulele

It is bigger than the concert and has a deeper sound as compared to both soprano and concert uke. Tenor ukuleles are not common, and you may find it hard to get them in various stores. This ukulele has a length of 26 inches and consists of 15 to 25 frets. The body of this instrument is larger as compared to soprano and concert and produces a better sound.

4.    Baritone

Baritone is the biggest of all the other ukuleles.  It is more of a guitar than ukulele as the strings are tuned the same way like a four strings guitar. This instrument has a length of 30 inches and consists of more than18 frets depending on the model. It is ideal for ukulele players who would like to proceed to learn how to play the guitar. As compared with other ukes, the baritone has the best sound. It is also made up of high-quality materials.

CONCLUSION

What have you learned from the above article? Do you now know what a ukulele is? It is my hope that the article has enlightened you on various issues about ukuleles that you did not know before. If you have ever wished to own the instrument, you have now learned some of the features of the various instruments. Ukuleles are suitable for everyone because as we have seen, there are different types for everyone. If you cannot afford to buy a guitar, you can start with these since most of them are cheap.
